Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most from new and current patients.
Getting Started
Do I need a doctor's referral to start physical therapy?
No. New Jersey has direct access laws for physical therapy, so you can book an evaluation and start treatment without a referral or prescription. One exception: Medicare patients need a physician’s script, which is a quick formality we can help with. If your doctor has given you a referral, bring it along, since it can contain useful information. But for most patients it isn’t required.
How do I book an appointment?
Call us at (973) 531-7592, fill out the contact form on our website, or stop by the clinic. We’ll schedule a free consultation first to make sure we’re the right fit before your first full evaluation, usually within 48 hours.
What should I bring to my first visit?
Your insurance card, a photo ID, and any relevant imaging or documentation from your doctor or surgeon if you have it. If you’ve had recent X-rays or an MRI related to your condition, those are helpful but not required.
Do you treat patients of all ages?
Yes, high schoolers and up. We treat patients of all ages, from teens managing sports injuries to older adults recovering from surgery or managing conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis. We do not treat young children.
Insurance & Payment
What insurance do you accept?
Franklin Physical Therapy is in-network with Medicare and most major commercial insurance plans. Call us to verify whether your specific plan is covered before your first visit.
What if I don't have insurance?
You can still receive care at Franklin Physical Therapy on a private pay basis. Call us to discuss rates.
Do you accept FSA or HSA payments?
Yes. We accept payments from Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA), as well as cash, check, and credit card.
Will insurance cover all of my sessions?
That depends on your plan. Most insurance plans cover a set number of physical therapy visits per year, subject to your deductible and copay. We recommend calling your insurer before your first visit to understand your specific benefits. We’re also happy to help with that if you call us.
Treatment & Care
How long will my treatment take?
It depends on the condition and how your body responds. A simple muscle strain might resolve in 4 to 6 sessions. Post-surgical recovery typically runs 8 to 12 weeks or more. We’ll give you a realistic estimate after your evaluation.
How often do I need to come in?
Most patients start at 2 to 3 times per week and taper down as they improve. Some conditions warrant less frequency. We’ll give you a recommendation at your evaluation.
Will I always see the same therapist?
You’ll work one-on-one with a licensed therapist at every session, and the same clinical team handles your care from start to finish. Your plan of care stays consistent throughout, no starting over and no re-explaining your history.
What techniques do you use?
Depending on the condition, treatment may include manual therapy, joint mobilization, soft tissue work, exercise-based rehabilitation, dry needling, and movement retraining. Every plan is built around what the evaluation finds.
Does physical therapy hurt?
It shouldn’t be painful in a way that makes things worse. Some discomfort is normal, especially in the early stages when we’re working on stiff or sensitized tissue. We adjust based on how you respond. If something doesn’t feel right, say so.
Home Visits
Do you offer home visits?
Yes. We offer physical therapy at home for patients who need it, particularly those recovering from surgery or dealing with limited mobility. Home visits typically cover the initial evaluation and early sessions before transitioning to our Franklin clinic.
How do I request a home visit?
Just let us know when you call or book. We’ll confirm whether a home visit makes sense for your situation and arrange scheduling from there.
Is home PT as effective as clinic-based PT?
Yes. The quality of assessment and hands-on treatment is the same. The main difference is that the clinic offers a broader range of equipment and space for functional rehab work, which is why most patients transition to the clinic as they progress.
Home visit eligibility may vary by payor — eligibility details to be confirmed.
Hours & Location
